SPD’s Scholz moves ahead after German chancellor debate — — -Brussels (Brussels Morning) Social Democrats (SPD) chancellor-candidate Olaf Scholz emerged as the strongest contender from the first televised debate of the German chancellor candidates on Sunday, held four weeks ahead of the federal elections.

Current vice-chancellor and finance minister Scholz appeared calm and mostly stayed out of heated exchanges between the other two candidates, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) candidate Armin Laschet and the Greens’ candidate Annalena Baerbock.
